The other night, I logged on to do the LFR raid on Lechoc. Now, I am a bit behind in a few areas, like the Legendary Cloak quest chain (I am stuck at the Sha of Anger quest, because no-one is doing THAT old raid any more!) but with a iLevel of 529, I am happy that I am not holding the LFR and Flex raids back.
So, everything is ready and we queue up for LFR. Into the raid, and..... INSTANT DC!
WTF?
I re-log, only to be DCd yet again.
And again.
I give up!
So, what went wrong? I had the next day off to do some "car stuff" so I spent some time investigating. This was a one-off thing, I have a purpose-built gaming computer with giga-stuff in it. It has never skipped a beat since I bought it about 8 months ago. I log on and attempt to kill some mobs on Timeless Isle. The screen gets all distorted, text starts to roll up and down the screen. This happens on two toons.
Looks like some corrupt files somewhere. I go to the Blizzard forums and it's obvious that others have had the same thing happen from time to time. The usual fix is to delete the WTF, Cache and Addons folders, and start again.
Well, I can't delete the WTF folder.
That's because WoW installs in the Program Files (X86) folder by default, and there's permission issues. The helpful blue guys tell us to install it in users/public/games. Yes, well, why can't you tell us that when wer are installing it?
Anyway, I do all this and I rebuilt all my add-ons (thank you Curse Client Pro) and all's well.
So, what caused the failure in the first place?
I can tell you now that I stumbled upon the cause quite by mistake, and it may be of interest to some of you.
I have a couple of PCs on a home network, one of them is used by the Wife to do work from home. She uses Citrix as the gateway. Recently, I jumped on the "Work From Home" bandwagon, too, and installed Citrix Receiver on my gaming machine. Just before I launched WoW to go LFR-ing, the Mrs whinged about being unable to connect to the work server. After I quit WoW for the night, I took a quick look and noticed that her Citrix program was empty.
Hmmm...
So I go to the Citrix site to find out any info, while she has a go with her IT people at the public service department she works for. In the meantime, I am browsing the Citrix forums, and see this one single post from a "Citrix Partner" whatever that is. It seems that other programs attempting to access the ADSL modem firewall at the 6,000 series ports at the same time that Citrix Receiver attempts to do the same thing, will cause all kinds of things to happen, depending on the firewall software of your particular modem. Deciphering the techno-babble, Citrix was preventing WoW from accessing a few ports.
So, I now have to set up my modem/router to prioritise WoW over Citrix, and that should solve that issue for the future. However, I think I'll just tell the Mrs to forget about working from home when I am raiding.
