Hi War Machiners, Sophdog the Crazy Cat Lady here with a guide to getting you through The Celestial Tournament, entry to which is offered by Master Li, standing near the southwest corner of the main arena area on the Timeless Isle.
The Celestial Tournament is a pet battle tournament comprising battles against three pet tamers (similar in nature to the pet tamer dailies), followed by battles against the offspring of the four Celestial Beasts - seven pet battles in total.
Minimum entry requirement is the possession of at least fifteen level 25 battle pets. However, seven battles will almost certainly require at least twenty-one level 25 pets - and realistically - a lot more than that, as you may wish to try different teams if you wipe on a particular battle, rather than reset the scenario.
You can use neither the "Revive Battle Pets" spell, nor pet bandages whilst in the scenario, so if things go badly early on, it may be easier to reset, heal up, and try again.
This guide will focus on the four Celestial pet battles, as they are without a doubt much tougher than the triad of tamers you fight first. Before you fight the tamers, follow the guide to see which pets are best kept in reserve for the Celestials.
A tip to fighting the tamers though - enter the battle with any pets you like, mouse over the tamer's pets, their breed and abilities, and see which pet comes out first. It is then relatively easy to select three pets of the right breeds; and which pet will lead off for you. Then surrender the fight without taking any actions, and you will leave the fight unscathed and forearmed with knowledge! And knowledge is power! And power is almost as good as noodles - mm... noodles!
Some basics first:
The Celestial pets are single, legendary pets with high health, some unique abilities, and by and large, they hit like trucks. They all have a "boss" buff, which means all damage dealt to them is reduced by half (like the Beasts of Fable pets), and a further buff which does not allow for damage of more than 35% of their total health in a single hit. This means strategies like the cockroach apocalypse don't help, so you'll have to gun them down the hard way - no shortcuts here!
I know it's a little easier when you have over 400 level 25 rare quality pets like I do - I have plenty to choose from. I will try to present some alternative teams where I have found them useful, and will endeavour to include pets that are relatively easy to obtain. At the very least you will know which pets to focus on obtaining/levelling as priorities. Let's rock!
Yu'la, Broodling of Yulon
Yu'la is a dragonkin pet that uses dragon and flying abilities. Yu'la is the only Celestial pet without a healing ability, so you just have to wear him down. I recommend using humanoid pets with blocking and interrupting abilities. Humanoids do increased damage against dragonkin, and you will need to mitigate/block/heal against his powerful attacks. I used the following team successfully:
Anubisath Idol - Crush, Stoneskin, Deflection
Feral Vermling - Crush, Backflip
Gregarious Grell - Punch, Cauterize
GG is a TCG pet and not easy to obtain, so some alternatives are Peddlefeet, Hopling, Flayer Youngling (must be a high speed breed) and Kun-Lai Runt.
Strategy: Yu'la will always open with Emerald Presence followed by Liftoff, then 3 x Jade Breath. Therefore, using Anubisath Idol, cast Stoneskin, Crush then Deflection first. Deflection always goes first, so will protect you against the faster Yu'la's Liftoff nuke. After that, spam Crush. Cast Stoneskin as soon as it expires, then again follow the pattern of Crush then Deflection, and spam Crush til Idol dies.
Use Feral Vermlings Backflip first, then spam Crush, using Backflip again every time it's off cooldown.
Use Gregarious Grell's Punch, Cauterize when needed, and Punch until dead. If you use alternative humanoids to GG, the basic principle is the same, block before Liftoff, interrupt where possible.
I found Yu'la to be the hardest of the four Celestials as RNG can wreck your plans. Therefore I fought Yu'la first (after defeating the three tamers), so I could reset and try again without too much wasted time.
Alternative teams I have seen and tried have all comprised various humanoids with interrupts/blocks, none very successfully. The team above is by far the most effective.
Update: Here is an even better strategy for Yu'la.
Clock'em - Jab until he casts his shield. As soon as he casts shield, use Dodge. Keep Jabbing until he shields again ad infinitum. You can almost solo Yu'la with Clock'em.
Gregarious Grell (or Peddlefeet as a more easily obtained alternative) - Just like Clock'em, Punch, and when he casts his shield, use Phase Shift. You will barely take a scratch.
Anubisath Idol - as a backup in the unlikely event he is needed.
Chi-Chi, Hatchling of Chi-Ji
Chi-Chi, being a crane, is of course a flying pet. Flying pets are weak against magic attacks, so that's the way we go. She has a heal, a dodge and a 2-3 hit elemental attack called Quills. Essentially we want magic dots and debuffs increasing the damage of those dots, as her dodge (Ethereal) doesn't usually dodge dots.
I've used 2 different teams successfully against Chi-Chi. Here is the first team (and the best I think):
Sen'jin Fetish - Wild Magic, Flame Breath
Oily Slimeling - Acidic Goo, Corrosion, Ooze Touch
Enchanted Lantern - Flash, Light, Beam (hmm flashlight beam - see what I did there?)
Strategy: With Fetish, cast Wild Magic, spam Flame Breath. Hopefully you will be able to cast Wild Magic one more time before Fetish dies. Pray to the RNG gods!
Slimeling: Acidic Goo, then Corrosion. Ooze Touch after, if you get the chance.
Enchanted Lantern: Hopefully Chi-Chi will be quite low by now - use Flash, Light and Beam in that order.
Any slime pet with Corrosion and Acidic Goo can substitute for Oily Slimeling.
An alternative team I have downed Chi-Chi with ('though a little more susceptible to RNG it seems to me) is:
Nexus Whelpling - Arcane Storm, Mana Surge
Arcane Eye - Drain Power, Focused Beams
Legs - Focused Beams, Surge of Power (when Chi-Chi's around 400 HP, i.e. within kill range)
Update: Here is an excellent team, fairly easy to obtain, with a strategy that works on all Celestial pets except Xu-Fu, and can also be used on tough single pets like Beasts of Fable.
Any undead pet with ability Curse of Doom - Damage Chi-Chi until you get to your undead 'bonus' round. Use Curse of Doom in the bonus round.
Pandaren Water Spirit - Geyser, Whirlpool, then swap in;
Chrominius (or any pet with howl, though Chrominius is best as he also has Surge of Power as a last-gasp emergency finishing move, which I've never yet had to use). Cast Howl, and watch as Geyser and Whirlpool work with Curse and Howl to nuke him down.
Caution - if you happen to cast Curse of Doom during the round where Yu'la is phased/dodges, then you're in trouble. I keep a spare Pandaren Water Spirit and Chrominius pet for such an occasion.
Xu-Fu, Cub of Xuen
I have successfully used three different teams on Xu-Fu in my many attempts at completing the Tournament. Here they are from best (in my opinion) to er... least best!
Tranquil Mechanical Yeti - Call Lightning, Metal Fist, Ion Cannon
Blue Clockwork Rocket Bot - Sticky Grenade, Toxic Smoke, Missile
Mechanical Pandaren Dragonling - Decoy, Bombing Run, Fly-by
Strategy: Start with Call Lightning (also changes weather from Moonfire - you like this!), then spam Metal Fist until you know you are about to die (for the first time - mechs get a rez of course), then Ion Cannon as a parting gift. A parting gift - how sweet of you!
With the Blue Bot - Grenade, Toxic Smoke, spam Missile until dead. Re-apply Toxic Smoke if you get a chance.
Mechanical Pandaren Dragonling - Decoy, Bombing Run, then Fly-by, hopefully until Xu-Fu bites the dust.
Alternative Teams are:
Arctic Fox Kit - Howl, Leap, Bite
Darkmoon Monkey - Clobber, Barrel Toss, Rake
Landro's Lil' XT - XE-321 Boombot, Zap
Or try any combination of high-powered mechs, such as :
Sunreaver Micro-Sentry - Call Lightning, Haywire
Cogblade Raptor - Exposed Wounds, Batter
Tiny Harvester - Metal Fist, Extra Plating, Demolish (iffy because of 50% miss chance)
Update: Here is a more effective team, that so far, has downed Xu-Fu first time each time for me so far.
Wild Golden Hatchling (or any pet which has the Call Lightning ability, and has a speed rating lower than 296) - Cast Call Lightning first up. Because Xu-Fu is faster he will cast Moonfire, and your pet will respond with Call Lightning, changing the weather to Lightning Storm. Immediately swap out to;
Cogblade Raptor - Use Exposed Wounds, followed by Batter. This should smash Xu-Fu down in 2-3 turns.
Have a third, high-powered mechanical pet as a back-up.
Zao, Calfling of Niuzao
Lil' Bad Wolf - Mangle, Howl
Wild Jade Hatchling - Call Lightning
Clockwork Gnome - Build Turret
Strategy: Notice how I've only included one or two abilities for each pet? That's because they are all you'll use, as follows:
Lil' Bad Wolf - Mangle
Swap to Wild Jade Hatchling - Call Lightning (after hopefully soaking the charge)
Swap to Clockwork Gnome - Build Turret
Swap to Lil' Bad Wolf - Howl
Watch in delight as turrets, buffed by Call Lightning (and Howl for double damage!) burn Zao to the ground before your very eyes! The only real risk is if Zao's charge crits Jade Hatchling - curse you RNG gods! *shakes a puny fist at RNG gods*

Good luck everyone and of course - hooray for pets!
